Interpreting the Scriptures
Lesson Two / April 2013
Our Present Evil World
I tire of hearing that the Scriptures contradict themselves. They never do. I tire of hearing that all of Scripture is an allegory (a story in which people, things, and happenings have a hidden or symbolic meaning). I do not disagree with the word, I disagree with the premise. A better word to me would be a picture (anything closely resembling or strikingly typifying something else: a perfect likeness or image). Or even shadow (a mirrored image, reflection; an omen, to represent vaguely, mystically, or prophetically; prefigure). Even a type (a person, thing, or event that represents or symbolizes another, that it is thought will appear later).
I refer to a national correspondent, who claims that all of the Bible is an allegory. He is missing the mark, a few inches off the bulls-eye. As stated, I agree with the word allegory, but I have difficulty labeling all of Scripture under this category. The word is misapplied. Other alternatives would be more appropriate.
This also falls in line with a priest who was recently interviewed regarding the Boston Bombings. The question posed to him was, “Why does God allow things like this to happen”? In his unscriptural reply he said, “No one can understand why God allows these things to happen”. How can a man of the cloth make such an untoward remark? Obviously, he does not know his Bible. God does not “allow” these things to happen. They happen because we are living in the evil of this earth. God is merely a bystander. How can God be just a bystander? Simply because God created the heavens and the earth and then allowed both good and evil to manifest themselves. It is called liberty. Man seeks liberty and freedom. Therefore God must be neutral in order to allow man to make his own choices. Satan is the current ruler of this earth and he creates havoc and evil, and it will prevail until his downfall by Jesus at the Judgment. One would most assuredly ask; “Where does it say that Satan is the ruler of this world?” Christ Himself stated in John: 16: 11: “the prince of this world is judged”. Further, talking to His disciples, He said: “Hereafter, I will not talk much with you; for the prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in me.” John: 14: 30. “Now is the judgment of this world; now shall the prince of this world be cast out.” Let us carry this to conclusion; Rev. 13: 4—8, “And they (the world; non belivers) worshiped the dragon (the anti-Holy Spirit) who gave power unto the beast: (Satan) and they worshiped the beast, saying; Who is like the beast? Who is able to make war with him? And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies, and power and was given unto him to continue forty and two months (three and a half years) this takes place during the Great Tribulation. And he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme his name, and his tabernacle, and them that dwell in heaven. And it was given unto him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them; and power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues, and nations. And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb (Jesus) slain from the foundation of the world. If any man have an ear, let him hear. He that leadeth into captivity shall go into captivity; he that killeth with the sword must be killed with the sword. Here is the patience and the faith of the saints.” One more reference: “and the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night forever and ever.” Rev. 20:10.
So much for non-understanding who is currently in control of the earth. Even Christ Himself acknowledged the power of Satan. When He was tempted after 40 days and 40 nights then Satan appeared to Him; “And all this authority will I (Satan) give thee, and the glory of them; for that is delivered unto me, and to whomsoever I will I give it. If thou, therefore, wilt worship me, all shall be thine. And Jesus answered, and said unto him; “Get thee behind me, Satan; for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord, thy God, and Him only shalt thou serve”. Luke 4:6—8. Verse 12 goes further; “And Jesus answering, said unto him (Satan); “It is said, Thou shalt not put the Lord, thy God, to the test.” Even Jesus Christ Himself acknowledged that Satan is currently the power of this earth. The Garden of Eden is where it began and at the Judgment it shall end. So do not blame God for the transgressions of this earth, place the blame where it belongs, upon the shoulders of Satan and his emissaries. They are those who create havoc and evil in this world not God. God is holy, righteous and cannot look upon evil. He wants man to look up and embrace Jesus the Christ for all unrighteousness. Satan is in the hog pit, wallowing in the filth, the muck and the mire, and trying to bring you into his stable. Are you going to listen to goat ears, or the calling of the Shepherd through the ears of the sheep? Christ says; “My sheep hear my voice”.
We see Satan’s true colors in Isaiah 14: 12—17: “How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! How art thou cut down to the ground, who didst weaken the nations! For thou hast said in thine heard, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God; I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north, I will ascend above the heights of the clouds, I will be like the Most High. Yet thou shalt be brought down to sheol, to the sides of the pit. They that see thee shall narrowly look upon thee, and consider thee, saying, Is this the man who made the earth to tremble, who did shake kingdoms, Who made the world like a wilderness, and destroyed its cities, who opened not the house of his prisoners?” Thus it is quite evident that Satan is the one who causes “things like this to happen; i.e. the bombing in Boston, other tragedies and horrors throughout the world”. Not God. He does not allow these things, it is rather Satan who creates them and makes them manifest. Therefore, when this priest states that; “no one can understand why God allows these things to happen” it tells me he does not know his bible. And quite frankly does not measure up to the standards of Priesthood.
One must understand that there are two opposing spirits in the world. The “Holy Spirit” and the Spirit of Evil. These are called in 1 Cor. 2:12, the Spirit which is of God, and the Spirit of the world. In 1 John 4: 5—6; The Spirit of Truth and the Spirit of Error. The Spirit of Error is the source of all Strong Delusion (2 Thess. 2:11) that is in the world today. Eph. 2:2 mentions that even Christians, before they were made alive through Christ, in times past, walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, (Satan) and that spirit now works in the sons of disobedience.
Here we see one of the Contrast of Scripture. The Bible speaks of two classes of people. Let’s read Eph. 3: 4—10; “Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law; for sin is the transgression of the law. And ye know that He (Jesus) was manifested to take away our sins, and in Him is no sin. Whosoever abideth in Him sinneth not; whosoever sinneth hath not seen Him, neither known Him. Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as He is righteous. He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil. Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him, and he cannot sin, because he is born of God. In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness, is not of God.”
Thus we see that the bulk of mankind is in “Obstinate Rebellion” against God. It is Satan who is the “Deceiver of the World”; Rev. 12:9. He raises “false hopes” and deludes by the “Deceitfulness of Riches” Matt. 13:22. The “Deceitfulness of Sin” Heb. 3:13 and the “Deceitfulness of Unrighteousness” 2 Thess. 2: 9—11. Satan causes the “exercise of the imagination,” and by “strong delusions” and “seducing spirits”. He tries to make men believe that his plans for the world’s betterment are right. His advocates point to the great increase in scientific knowledge and invention, the great advance in methods of world-wide communication by land, sea, and air, and the various inventions that lighten labor and add to domestic comfort, and claim that the world is growing better, not only because of these, but because of the great philanthropies of men that have founded colleges, libraries, hospitals and great charitable institutions, forgetting that these things only tend to the physical helpfulness of man and have little to do with his moral character, and over-looking the fact that, in spite of all this advancement of civilization, the world sits on the mouth of a volcano, whose interior is a “foaming cauldron” of social unrest and commercial rottenness.
When the “God of this Age”(Satan) discovered that he could not stamp out the Church by persecution, he changed his tactics and now seeks to neutralize her efforts by seduction. His method is to divert her efforts for the evangelization of the world, to methods of “Social Betterment,” and thus make the world a better place to live in, forgetting that, as the natural man cannot be spiritually saved by Culture, neither can the world, therefore all efforts to save the world by “Social Betterment” are futile. And when the Church lends her aid to such methods she confesses that Christ’s method of saving the world is “Insufficient”, and thus discounts the power of the Gospel. Christian men give vast sums of money for the “Social, Intellectual, and Physical Betterment of the world,” rather than for the evangelization of the world. They even go farther and form societies for the investigation of “adverse social conditions,” such as poverty, vice, ignorance, etc., and appoint specialists at high salaries and exorbitant fees to investigate and see if they can discover the cause of all the sin, misery and wretchedness that is in the world, forgetting that in so doing they are wasting their money, for the Bible told us centuries ago that the cause was “Sin”. If the proper thing to do is to remedy a thing at its source, let the Church apply the remedy of the Gospel and save the individual and by thus doing save society. The common opinion is, that all the “ills of society” are in men’s surroundings, or environment, whereas they are in man himself. Hence all human schemes for the “Betterment of Society” must begin in the man himself. That is, man must first be “Regenerated” by the Holy Spirit. All the schemes of men to make this world a better place to “Live In,” seem to be to make the world a better place to “Sin In,” because they increase the facilities for sin and sinfulness, not goodness.
In our next lesson I shall distinguish the difference between the Two Natures of Man as revealed by Clarence Larkin. Other subjects will be taken up by far loftier pens than that of this writer, such as Clarence Larkin, C.H. Mackintosh, A.W. Pink and more, all of whom the Holy Spirit richly blessed in discerning the Scriptures. These writings come down to us from several books, none more recent than 20 years ago. As a matter of fact many from no earlier than 40 or 50 years ago. Some not even dated, some of which even the publisher no longer exist. I respectfully and lovingly refer to them as the “Old Timers”. It brings to mind that in the halls of history for centuries, Bible Stories were handed down from fathers to their families and children, from mouth to mouth, from inspired teachers, to receptive ears. It is my earnest desire that you possess “sheep ears”, and not “goat ears”, for our Lord saith: “My sheep, hear my voice”.
It is my fondest hope and prayer that you will enjoy this journey with me. “To study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that neededth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” 2nd Tim. 2:15. To “grow in grace and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and forever. Amen. 2nd Peter 3:18
Until our next time together, may God bless you and yours…
